The National Cancer Plan – The need for more emotional support.

Last month the government published the new 10-year National Cancer Plan for England, and there is much to be positive about. We welcome the ambition to increase cancer survivorship rates from the current 60% to 75% by 2035. Achieving this goal will require new investment in specialist equipment, resources, and continued innovation to improve diagnosis and treatment.

The comprehensive 84-page plan also addresses a wide range of other important issues that must be tackled if we are to improve how we respond to the challenges cancer presents. Importantly, it recognises that the healthcare system needs to work more effectively with charities such as Cancer Support UK, which provide specialist support in areas beyond the scope of NHS services.

The acknowledgement that a holistic approach to cancer treatment is essential is something we have long advocated for, and I am pleased to see this clearly reflected in the new plan. It proposes that every patient will receive an individual support plan, which will include mental health and employment support. We know that every individual’s journey is unique, and that recovery for many people continues long after physical treatment has ended.

We know that an estimated 78% of people who are diagnosed with cancer need more emotional support and not only will we be asking the relevant organisations to work with us to meet this need, but we also really need to see funding made available to support the development and delivery of specialist emotional support services. Our experience is that it is easier to get funding for something ‘physical’ but is challenging when it is in relation to ‘emotional needs’.

Our Cancer Coach service continues to evolve. By working alongside people with lived experience of cancer and healthcare professionals, we are providing meaningful support and helping to drive real progress towards our goal of creating a kinder world for everyone affected by cancer.

In this newsletter you will also see how we have continued to listen to you. We will soon be launching a new service designed to support the family members and friends affected by a loved one’s cancer diagnosis.

Once again, I would like to thank you all for your ongoing support.
Together, we are making a real difference.
