In memory of Anna James

Anna JamesIt is with deep sadness that we inform you about the passing of Anna James, Cancer Support UK’s former Head of Service, who was a highly valued and much respected staff member from 2019 to 2021.

Anna was fundamental in the development of our Cancer Coach service, from initial testing of the groups to overseeing their growth and development over the coming years. Having had a previous cancer diagnosis before joining Cancer Support UK, Anna knew first-hand the challenges faced by those post treatment and this personal insight, combined with her professional experience, gave the groups their heart.

Anna JamesAs a manager and colleague, Anna was a delight to work with. Warm, empathetic, insightful and great fun, she was well liked by all who knew her. Her work touched the lives of many people and, though she is no longer with us, the impact of her work will live on and stand as her legacy.

Here are some messages from Cancer Coach volunteers who worked with Anna:

  • Anna was such a warm, empathetic and supportive person. The Cancer Coach Service is so important and will stand as Anna’s legacy. As cancer coaches we will be honouring Anna in all the work that we do for the charity and this news just makes me even more determined to play my part. Dorothy
  • I only knew Anna for a short while, and yet she left a very deep and positive impression on me. She was a friendly person who shared her huge knowledge with others with clarity and sensitivity in her training role. I shall remember her with great respect – and I have a very positive memory of the wide-ranging impact of her work. Iona
  • Anna was such a calming influence and such a good communicator. Her gentle manner on all the calls that I was privileged to be part of with her, was felt by all. Carolyn

Anna, you are greatly missed. You were so much more than just a colleague.

Our hearts go out to Anna’s family at this difficult time. Please keep them in your thoughts.
