Max’s story: How a Cancer Kit and Cuddles Bear brought hope during treatment

After feeling unwell for a few months and experiencing unexplained bruising and tiredness, Max was diagnosed with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukaemia – just one month after his seventh birthday.

The devastating news turned his life upside down. Suddenly, everything familiar was gone. Max found himself missing school trips, playing sports, and spending time with his friends – while for his older brother, Ronnie, life carried on as normal.

“Max struggled emotionally in those early weeks,” his mum Laura recalls. “He didn’t understand why his life had changed so much.”

A long, difficult treatment journey

Treatment was relentless. Chemotherapy left Max feeling exhausted and unwell, and the once-active little boy could no longer walk unaided. Rugby and football, which he loved, became impossible. When leaving the house, he needed a wheelchair, and at home, his parents carried him from room to room.

But more recently, steroids helped improve his mobility and with that came a much-needed boost in his mood.

A small gift that meant the world

It was during one of his hospital stays that Max received a Kids’ Cancer Kit from Cancer Support UK. Inside were practical and comforting items designed to bring some relief during treatment.

The impact was immediate:

“When Max opened his Kids’ Kit, his face lit up,” says Laura his mum. “The yellow Minion socks were his favourite – he wears them every time he goes to hospital.”

But the surprises didn’t stop there.

“The warmable bunny was another huge hit. It soothes his stomach aches after chemo and gives him the softest, most comforting cuddles.”

For Max’s mum, the notepad inside the kit became an essential hospital companion:

“We use it to jot down medical details and also our thoughts and reflections. It’s been invaluable,” says Laura

Then came a Cuddles bear

Alongside his kit, Max later received one of our Cuddles Bears – a soft, huggable friend to bring extra comfort during long hospital stays. These simple gifts gave Max something no medicine could provide: joy.

“They brought light into a very dark period,” says Laura. “They restored his smile when he needed it most.”
